Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Animal Science is seeking candidates for the position of Academic Advisor I or II with responsibilities in undergraduate transfer student recruitment, orientation, and advising. The Academic Advisor will advise students on course selection, degree program design, and career options based on student’s academic skills and interests. This position will communicate with the faculty coordinator of the undergraduate curriculum for Animal Science and Dairy Science majors and pre-veterinary students to hire, train, and supervise peer mentors for transfer students and coordinate their activities in conjunction with the academic advisor. Other duties include assisting undergraduate students with referrals to appropriate campus resources; counseling students on academic warning or probation; collecting data and requesting corrections to student’s degree audit; and assisting in retention and outreach programs. The person in this position will work in a team environment and in consultation with the faculty member responsible for oversight of incoming freshmen undergraduate students and the department undergraduate curriculum coordinator. This position will evaluate and make recommendations on transfer student appeals, waivers, and exceptions to the program requirements. This position will report undergraduate enrollment, retention, graduation, and placement statistics to the appropriate College office.
An Academic Adviser II will work with a higher level of leadership, initiative, and independence, and will also develop metrics and lead initiatives developed in partnership with faculty. They will spend a greater amount of time recruiting.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience.
Supplemental Required Education and Experience
The requirements above are for the Academic Adviser I.
Academic Adviser II: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
-Academic training in animal science, agricultural education and communication, or a related agricultural field. -Experience advising/counseling or teaching high school or college students. -Experience advising university students in a STEM program. -Experience that demonstrates an understanding of university policies, procedures, resources, and technology.
Location (if other than Ames)
Position may occasionally include nights and weekends during special events.
