Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Network Security Architect which may be filled at a senior level. This position will help define, architect and oversee implementation of network security devices. This is a hands-on, highly technical role responsible for configuration, deployment, and support of network security technologies. Duties include evaluating network technologies and network protocols, developing and/or recommending security configurations for routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, load balancers, and wireless technologies.

This position may be hired at a higher level. In addition to the duties noted, the higher level role will be responsible for leading security related projects with security technology teams across the university and mentor/develop staff.

This position requires an in depth understanding of routing protocols, firewall technologies, and the ability to identify security flaws and offer mitigatation solutions.

ITS provides core computing, network services, enterprise systems, and information security resources to the students, faculty, and staff of Iowa State. ITS partners with IT professionals from around campus to provide more specialized IT resources to ISU’s academic and business units.

The successful candidate will be detail oriented, self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, and have the ability to troubleshoot, learning new skills, tools, and technologies. Applicants must also possess strong time management, organizational skills, and decision making skills with the ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex problems.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

The requirements above are for the Network Security Architect.

Network Security Architect, Senior: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience.

For either position: - Demonstrated experience must include Cisco routing and switching technologies.

  • Must include demonstrated understanding of routing protocols, firewall technologies, and the ability to identify security flaws and offer mitigation solutions.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, MIS, or IT-related degree.
  • Experience that demonstrates extensive knowledge of network security appliances and firewalls, preferably Cisco.
  • Demonstrated experience with secure network protocols.
  • Demonstrated experience with network traffic analyzers.
