Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Residence (DOR) at Iowa State University is seeking applications for a Systems Support Specialist III to serve as a member of the DOR Technology Services staff.

The Systems Support Specialist provides direct support and management for databases, hardware, and third-party software systems that safeguard over 12,700 student residents and protect more than $380,000,000 in physical DOR assets. Duties include development and use of reporting tools, maintaining and supporting departmentally managed safety and security systems, maintaining and administering databases, performing validation procedures, applying and managing patches, performing system upgrades, and making updates. This position also collaborates closely and frequently with internal DOR staff, University staff, and external vendors to maintain and improve existing services including analysis of need and management of projects. Additional responsibilities include serving as backup/support for other members of the DOR Technology Services team and supervising student employees.

The successful candidate will possess strong problem solving, time management, and project management skills. Additionally, strong organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, and excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience; OR a combination of education and related experience totaling 5 years.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

Preferred Education and Experience

Degree in Operations Management, Computer Programming, Computer Engineering, management information system (MIS), or other related field.

Experience performing end-user support functions such as exporting and importing files, developing queries, and writing reports.

Experience with Relational Database Management Systems (RDMS) (such as SQL Server, Oracle, Informix, Progress, Pervasive, and/or Microsoft (MS) Access).

Experience with comprehensive Information Technology project management as it relates to installation or upgrades of complex software systems.

Experience training end users on software systems.

Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
