Advanced Operations Engineering is seeking to add a Materials & Process Engineer to its staff. Advanced Operations Engineering is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology organization that is responsible for developing and maturing manufacturing technologies and processes for the Rockwell Collins North American manufacturing locations. The Advanced Operations Engineering focus manufacturing process areas include, but are not limited to, soldering, circuit card assembly, microelectronics manufacturing, heads down displays ruggedization, as well as electronics cleaning, coating, and bonding processes. This position will focus on soldering materials and process, solder joint reliability, leaded and lead-free materials and processes as well as all types of metallurgy and finishes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide Materials Engineering expertise in the areas of soldering materials and processes, solder joint reliability, leaded and lead-free materials and processes, as well as all types of metallurgy and finishes. The person in this position will work closely with Rockwell Collins’ Enterprise Engineering Fellow in this area to develop his/her expertise. • Provide materials selection/evaluation and process selection support. Support is most often required by Rockwell Collins the Commercial and Government Product Design Engineering organizations and the Manufacturing organizations, but also by Program Management, Material and Supply, Reliability, Service Centers, and Quality Assurance as well as by external customers, business partners, and industry colleagues. • Conduct engineering studies pertaining to electronics materials and processes. Studies will include planning, managing, and executing material & process evaluations and testing, as well as documenting and publishing results and procedures. • Support Manufacturing in the deployment of new materials and processes. This includes working with Manufacturing Engineers, Industrial Engineers, Manufacturing Trainers, Manufacturing Quality Engineers, etc. • Assist Production personnel with resolving manufacturing process issues and fielding general process inquiries of broad scope and high complexity. • Design and oversee complex failure analyses and product/process troubleshooting lab analysis. • Conduct research pertaining to materials & processes analysis/lab equipment and participate in capital planning for, attainment of, and installation of such equipment. • Work very closely with the Advanced Operations Engineering lab manager and mentor engineering co-op students. • Participate actively and in-depth in relevant government & industry forums in order to keep up-to-date in state-of-the-art electronics manufacturing materials & processes, to ensure understanding of the applicability of Industry Standards to Rockwell Collins manufacturing in the technical areas of responsibility, and to represent Rockwell Collins as a leader in industry in high reliability electronics manufacturing industry.

ATTRIBUTES: • Experience with electronics assembly, workmanship, and testing. • Experience with statistical analysis and designing experiments. • Experience with metallurgical test procedures and analytical lab equipment/techniques such as Real-time X-ray, X-ray Fluorescence, X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). • Experience with and understanding of failure modes of electronics materials. • Experience in castings, corrosion, electrochemistry, joining methods, coatings/plating, and other aerospace materials. • Extensive knowledge and experience in root cause investigation methodology and test equipment capabilities to aid in investigation. • Broad knowledge of electronics manufacturing process equipment and processes. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to establish effective working relationships. • Strong presentation skills in order to effectively communicate all test results to internal and external customers. • Must be able to obtain security clearance. Work requires individual to have full access to manufacturing areas that are export restricted and the ability to obtain a Security Clearance at some point in the future if asked to work on restricted programs/products. • Must be able to effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, meet deadlines and manage time independently.

Position requires some travel. Travel to and from Rockwell Collins facilities in a 100 mile radius of Cedar Rapids, IA is occasionally required. Additional domestic travel required (10%) can be expected and international travel may be required on occasion

DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES: • Master’s Degree in Materials Science Engineering / Metallurgy or similar field. • Familiarity with analytical lab techniques such as Surface Insulation Resistance (SIR) testing, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) microscopy, Ion/Gas Chromatography. • Proficiency in statistical analysis and designing experiments a definite plus.

Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline.

US Citizenship is required. Candidate must be able to obtain a US DoD Security Clearance. Must have the following experience - Electronics assembly / manufacturing and Metallurgical test procedures and analytical lab equipment.
