Youth Emergency Services & Shelter YESS - Residential Cook Assistant - Part Time in Des Moines, Iowa

About the Residential Cook Assistant Position:Under the guidance of the Kitchen Supervisor, provide nutritious meals and snack for youth at YESS and maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment. Responsible for management and control of food inventory and meal preparation. Please note that this opportunity is Part Time only, working an average work week of approximately 24 hours, including some weekends and holidays.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare kitchen schedule to include meal service schedule.

  • Maintain and post inventory control of all food and beverage items.

  • Follow menu weekly.

  • Prepare nutritious and delicious meals for youth & staff.

  • Demonstrate and teaching kitchen and cooking skills including planning, food preparation and clean up with youth at YESS and community volunteers.

  • Purchase groceries, food commodities, and all other misc. items necessary for food preparation.

  • Ensure security of food products while in storage.

  • Maintain resident meal count on a daily basis.

  • Maintain and promote a clean, sanitary kitchen.

  • Other duties as assigned.

CLASSIFICATION: Hourly, Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrate experience in institutional food preparation and/or management.

  • Interest in working directly with youth of all ages.

  • Thorough knowledge of the basic food groups and their nutritional impact.

  • Experience in menu planning

  • Good personal hygiene
