Driver Supervisor, $23.12 – 32.37/Hour. Supervises staff of bus drivers and dispatchers. Manages and adjusts working schedules for bus drivers, dispatchers, and public transit bus route service. Responds to inquiries, complaints and correspondence from customers and the public. Prepares staff reports, route analysis, and studies related to transit operations. Evaluates performance of bus drivers and dispatchers; including performance reviews and corrective actions as needed. Commercial Driver’s License required.

Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the general direction of the Transit Operations Supervisor, supervises staff of bus drivers, trainers, dispatchers, and clerical personnel. Evaluates the performance of subordinates, completes performance reviews, and disciplinary actions of staff as needed, and manages and adjusts working schedules for staff and public transit systems. Responds to inquiries, complaints and correspondence from customers and the public and prepares staff reports, route analysis, and studies related to transit operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION (with or without accommodation):

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides direction to bus drivers.

  • Answers questions and resolves customer service issues and concerns relating to transit services.

  • Performs inspections of buses and bus stops to ensure cleanliness and safety.

  • Addresses questions and resolves conflicts between employees.

  • Review transit system procedures and makes recommendations for improvements.

  • Interviews and hires, evaluates and disciplines drivers, dispatchers.

  • Maintains good public relations through courteous and prompt attention to all citizen requests for services.

  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours.

  • Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.

  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ABILITES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you, ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

Job Knowledge: Understanding of operation of public transportation systems and related safety procedures, ordinances, regulations, and traffic laws; understanding of modern business management principles and practices; knowledge of public transit funding and general budget practices; knowledge of a computerized transit systems and record keeping; knowledge and understanding of current personnel management practices. Ability to direct, supervise, and evaluate transit personnel and activities; ability to supervise drivers in operating buses and bus schedules; ability to maintain good labor relations with employees and manage labor related issues; ability to resolve minor grievances and disciplinary actions; ability to investigate and resolve customer complaints courteously and in a timely manner. Must be able to respond in an emergency and provide transit services.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills. Requires the ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials and staff, business representatives and the general public.

Physical Requirements: Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.

Work Environment: While performing ten percent of the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic and caustic chemicals and the noise level is loud. Ninety percent of the duties are performed in a normal inside office environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards other than those normally associated with general public contact, dust or odors.

Special Requirements: Must possess or be able to obtain within 60 days a valid Commercial Driver’s License and other permits and endorsements as required and issued by the State of Iowa; and to submit to a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE/ TRAINING:

High school diploma or equivalent, a minimum of two years’ technical experience. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities.
