Job Description

The Department of Management (DOM), Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeking an Information Technology Specialist 4, Database Administratorto join our team!

This position will be responsible for supporting, maintaining, and creating reports and products for Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC). In this position you will work with MSSQL server databases and administrator positions leading the company database environment.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Administer, design, write, support, and maintain applications for the DOC using ColdFusion / HTML / CSS / SQL / AJAX / JavaScript / PHP with the ability to work in other programming languages as needed.

  • Create reports from various sources.

  • SQL/Database administration, design, configuration, and development (both development and production environments); SQL server maintenance, including but not limited to maintenance plans, backup and optimization of databases.

  • Design and configure databases to be used for DOC applications.

  • Serves as a primary contact for 1st District user community regarding hardware and software issues.

  • Assists in resolving operational issues through technical competencies involving written and verbal communications by utilization of Core Correctional Practices (CCP) and technical abilities while adhering to DOM DoIT and DOC/1st District policies and procedures.

  • Performs setup of new user computer access, which includes necessary security levels for areas of work and user help-desk services; provides documentation and trains end-users on how to use and access reports and forms. Assists staff in resolving problems relating to automated information systems; provides technical assistance and support when needed.

  • Installs/upgrades system components (e.g., hardware and software) and develops installation plans, configuring, tuning, placing, testing and training users. Coordinates implementation of the systems; develops, coordinates and administers customer training; provides system enhancements and maintenance as required.

  • Assists with the administration of VDI and Citrix, computer hardware/software installations, network coordination, managing over 200 computer devices, and the local area network throughout eleven counties in Northeast Iowa.

  • Keep current with technology to meet 1st District operational needs. Knowledge base includes, but not limited to servers, databases, programs, disaster recovery, infrastructure, programming principles, and user applications necessary for operational success.

  • Order equipment and supplies as needed; manage inventory of equipment and supplies per Iowa Code, policies, and procedures.

The successful candidate will select one of the District's area offices (Waterloo, Independence, Oelwein, Manchester or Dubuque) as their official domicile.

SHIFT: Variable schedule, however generally Monday - Friday 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. with flexibility to accommodate assigned duties such as travel, training and technical support of 24/7 residential correctional facilities

This position will be primarily in-office.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and experience equal to two years of full-time work: operating a multi-job computer; installing, operating and coordinating computer based networks; installing/maintaining database management systems; developing business application processes; developing/operating system programs; installing/maintaining personal computers, Local Area Networks and/or servers; managing operating systems; developing/ delivering information management training; providing Information Technology (IT) customer service; or designing/administering Internet sites;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the completion of an approved curriculum/specialized training program developed and implemented by or in cooperation with state government; or eighteen semester hours of accredited post high school course work in one of the specialty areas listed above; or certification by an authorized educational institution/major computer or software producer in an area directly related to one of the specialty areas listed above, for the required education;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of the required experience for thirty semester hours of the required education;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to six months of full-time work as an Information Technology Specialist 3.
