The Bridges and Structures Bureau is seeking to hire aBridge Engineer Associate(Transportation Engineer Associate) that will be an essential part of the Bridge Project Development team in our Final Design Unit. This position requires an individual capable of applying engineering principles in the design of highway structures and transportation improvement projects of a broad scope and complexity that is vital to make Iowa roadways safer while fulfilling our Mission -Making Lives Better Through Transportation. This position will foster growth and support for its reporting team through the five core values of the department:Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception.

This position will perform progressively responsible introductory engineering work assignments to become eligible for licensing as a professional engineer.

As a Bridge Engineer Associate, your daily responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Performing structural analysis and design of different types of simple to moderately complex highway structures utilizing steel, aluminum, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, and wood. Simple to moderately complex highway structures include standard and slightly modified standard bridges, culverts, retaining walls, sign trusses, and routine overlay and repair projects. Design of this categorical complexity are expected for the majority of the time.

  • Draws or models the ideas conceived in the design of proposed structure for project plans or provides direction for a design technician to draw/model these ideas. Consults with design technicians to ensure that all necessary details, dimensions, notes, and specifications are shown on the completed design plan and the plan clearly reflects the intent of the design.

  • Reviewing plans and shop drawings for simple to moderately complex structures submitted by outside sources for approval.

  • Assists in the performance of inspections, analyzing any deficiencies and writing reports containing recommendations and cost estimates on structures that must be repaired or reconstructed to maintain serviceability of the highway system.

  • Manages simple to moderately complex projects assigned to ensure the design plan is complete and personnel working on the project are informed.

  • Professional Development – May work on special projects and/or for other offices/districts across the Department as assigned to gain experience beneficial to become eligible to sit for the Professional Engineer exam and gain Professional Engineering licensure.

Location: Ames, Iowa

Shift Requirements: Days M-F, flex available. Occasional travel to workshops, national conferences, field exams for inspection, and site exams.

Additional Qualification Requirements:Applicants hired with verification of graduation will be required to graduate with a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university within 10 months of hire.

Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to obtain one or more of the following certificates, licenses, or endorsements:

  • Certification as an engineer intern by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board in the first 24 months.

  • Licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board is required within 9 years for continued employment; temporary training assignments will terminate within six months following a second attempt to obtain a professional engineer license or nine years from date of hire.
