Job Description:

InTrans is currently seeking candidates for a Bridge Engineering Researcher. This position will be classified as a Research Scientist III.

The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) is a $16 million research organization at Iowa State University that includes 15 centers and programs. InTrans conducts transportation-related research and outreach, and addresses the education and workforce development needs of future transportation professionals. This position will work as a key member of the Bridge Engineering Center (BEC), regularly interacting with local, state, and federal agency sponsors while conducting applied bridge-related research.

This is a one-year, fixed term position with the expectation for renewal based on funding availability.

This position will require occasional travel, mostly within the state of Iowa.

SummaryResponsible for the oversight, completion, and reporting of on-site and laboratory bridge-related research in cooperation with other BEC personnel and project sponsors.Example of Duties

  • Executes research work plans in the areas of innovative bridge materials, novel bridge construction approaches, bridge evaluation using field collected data, structural analysis by finite elements, laboratory testing of bridge components and entire bridge systems, field testing of structures, and interpretation of structural performance based upon available information. The successful candidate will be comfortable with working in a structures laboratory and on a construction site installing and operating data collection instrumentation.

  • Writes reports summarizing project status and results. Assists in creating and giving presentations to project sponsors and other interested individuals. Formulate demonstrations where beneficial.

  • Develops, maintains, or works toward professional licensure by attending local, national, and international professional and academic conferences. Stays abreast of current applications of new technology to bridge engineering with the specific goal of creating cutting edge research opportunities.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.

Level Guidelines• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist• Provides guidance to students
