Summary

Are you an experienced, creative, and integrity-driven business leader who thrives in a team-focused, customer-service driven, and high-achieving environment? Have you worked to rebuild an organization to improve overall service delivery and collaboration across diverse functions? Iowa State University and the Facilities Planning and Management department seek proactive, people-centric leaders to propel their teams forward in this newly designed position. In partnership with three other peers, a director will oversee a team of approximately 100 employees in professional and scientific and merit positions. This individual will serve as a multifaceted leader supporting a specific area of campus, ensuring the delivery of services in design, construction, shops/trades, grounds care, custodial, capital projects, and other service areas as assigned. The director must bring together a variety of technical and functional groups into a cohesive, unified team in a large-scale, high-performance environment to align and support the university’s mission.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing direction and strategic leadership to a diverse team of technical, professional, and service personnel who provide comprehensive services to an area of campus

  • Collaborating with peers to ensure consistent processes and standardization

  • Developing and maintaining partnerships with key stakeholders across campus through effective communication and transparency

  • Creating a high-performing and customer-focused team

  • Providing leadership, strategy, oversight, and direct management of team

  • Shaping the team to reinforce collaboration, accountability, and responsibility

  • Creating a climate that values and recognizes initiative, innovation, service excellence, continuous learning, stewardship, and the achievement of results

  • Providing seamless delivery of highly reliable, customer-oriented, and collaborative services with a focus on effective and efficient operations

  • Overseeing and managing a budget, expenses, and financial forecasts to ensure optimal allocation of resources and financial health

  • Developing strategies to maximize financial efficiency and profitability, while maintaining compliance with financial regulations and standards

  • Overseeing the operational management of the services comprised of construction, shops/trades, design, grounds care, custodial, capital projects, and other services

  • Cultivating highly skilled staff and improving internal processes within available budgets to deliver outcomes that support the university’s mission

To be successful in this important leadership role, you will demonstrate strengths in collaboration, strategy, relationship building, and dynamic leadership across a variety of units, functions, and staff. You will be a creative problem solver, financial steward, effective communicator, and a change management leader who will work to improve operational efficiencies, increase the use of analytics, and enhance team performance. You will lead efforts to build effective formal and informal communication channels with customers, university departments, and college administration that are integral to the success of services in your campus area.

Level Guidelines• May provide input into the strategic planning process• Operationalizes annual goals and objectives from strategic plan with department(s) to develop annual departmental objective and action plans• Develops and recommends institution policy within area of functional or operational expertise• Scope of influence may be a function, a large sub function, or multiple sub functions• Manages staff and sets priorities for department(s)• Typically has sufficient staff to have multiple Managers or Supervisors as direct reports• Has full management responsibility for direct reports, specifically the authority to hire, fire, and counsel• Understands key drivers of financial performance for operational areas• Provides substantial input to the budgeting process• Responsible for budgetary decisions according to guidelines within functional area• Recommends financial decisions that impact area of responsibility
