Sawyer Elementary is seeking an English Learner Teacher for the 2024-2025 school year.

    SummaryUnder the direction of the Building Principal, the EL teacher provides specialized instruction for the purposes of developing students’ ability to effectively perform courses of study in English and acquire the English language.Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Provides EL services in an intensive program.

  • Administers state required testing to English Learners (ELs) (ELPA21, ISASP).

  • Provides academic and English support to ELs as needed.

  • Plans for and work with individuals or small groups of ELs.

  • Collaborates with ELs’ classroom teachers and EL teachers on a regular basis to meet the needs of ELs.

  • Builds relationships with culturally diverse students and their families to ensure that each student reaches his/her full potential.

  • Attends monthly EL meetings and training opportunities at the district and state level.

  • Must be willing to support and implement Ames Schools multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) for both behavior and academics.

  • Participates in building and district professional learning communities to plan for instruction, analyze data, and create assessments.

  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Iowa teaching license with a K-12 ESL endorsement required.

The successful candidate will exhibit:

  • Extensive knowledge of second language acquisition, research, and best teaching practices as applied to ELs’ linguistic and academic development.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students to ensure each child reaches their full potential.

  • Good attendance and punctuality are a must to ensure that the duties and responsibilities of the job are performed successfully.

  • Experience teaching ESL at the elementary level preferred.

  • Knowledge of best practices in guided reading instruction.

  • Strong understanding of MTSS and ability to design, implement, and monitor interventions.

  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students.

  • Application of the PLC framework.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to speak second language in Spanish, Chinese or Arabic preferred.

  • Ability to create a sense of belonging and welcoming environment for all students and staff.

  • Punctual and consistent basis work attendance.
