Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Bioeconomy Institute (BEI) at Iowa State University is currently accepting applications for a Research Technology Specialist. The BEI coordinates Iowa State University’s research, education and outreach efforts in Biorenewables resources; and is internationally recognized for its programs in biomass feedstock production, biomass conversion to fuels and chemicals, and systems analysis. Funding is obtained from federal, state and industry sources. Major federal funding comes from the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Science Foundation.

The Research Technology Specialist provides key operations and research support for the Bioeconomy Institute, with activities at the BioCentury Research Farm (BCRF) near Boone, IA, and the Biorenewables Research Laboratory (BRL) located on the Iowa State University campus. These responsibilities include planning and executing research projects, creating a safe work environment with non-standard research equipment, and establishing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for both novel and commercially available equipment and instrumentation. Responsibilities also include working closely with BEI engineers and scientists to design, modify and construct processing equipment, including implementation and modification of automation and controls.

The successful candidate will have the ability to make independent decisions related to operations and maintenance of novel pilot and laboratory scale reactor systems. The successful candidate will have also have the ability to work with engineers to fabricate new equipment and modify existing equipment.

Additional Information

This position is expected to travel to carry out position responsibilities. This includes to and from work sites, both on and off campus. This may also include delivering samples, feedstock, equipment and instrumentation. Therefore, candidates must have access to reliable transportation. An ISU vehicle may be made available to qualified candidates.
