Mary Greeley Medical Center Patient Safety Monitoring Technician in Ames, Iowa

  • Position Summary

  • Under the direction of the Nurse Manager and with supervision of the Charge Nurse, the Patient Safety Monitoring Technician provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients. The Patient Safety Monitoring Techncian will verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at-risk behaviors and summon the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance. The Patient Safety Monitoring Technician is knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related hospital policies. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient-centered care.

  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the AvaSys TeleSitter Solution software. Reviews pertinent information and behaviors.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide the appropriate care to this patient population based on the patient’s individualized care needs as delegated by the RN.

  • Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment.

  • Seeks help or advice as soon as possible when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others. Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues. Assures patient environment safety. Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to the RN. Provides floor staff with information in a timely fashion when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others

  • Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department safety programs.

  • Provides patient with explanations as necessary, but does not counsel or provide opinions. Demonstrates behaviors in line with Service Excellence.

  • Maintains visual observation at all times. Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room. Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.

  • Uses oral and written means as well as equipment such as the telephone, Avasure system, and Mobile Heartbeat system to communicate with members of the health care team, patients, and visitors.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Completion of basic life support for Healthcare Providers within 90 days of hire.

  • Knowledge of computer skills related to AvaSys TeleSitter Solution software within six weeks of hiring.

  • Organizational Requirements:

  • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Previous experience in a hospital environment.

  • Previous Clinical experience.

  • Previous Direct Patient Care experience.

  • Certification (Nurse Assistant/Medical Assistant)

  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Capable of continuous monitoring of up to 12 patients on one screen at one time and remaining alert at all times while on duty.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset

  • Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes.

  • Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff

  • Basic computer operation skills

  • Basic Microsoft windows experience

  • Efficiency in multitasking

  • Ability to prioritize simultaneous situations

  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience in providing direct patient care preferred
