Job Description

Location: Ames, Iowa

Shift Requirements: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (flexible schedule option), In-person with option for partial telework schedule. Occasional travel and overnights for project visits or conferences.

The Transportation Development Division is looking to hire aPavement Modeler and Analystto join the pavement management team. As part of this team, you will develop and implement strategies to maintain and extend the lifespan of pavements on Iowa DOT’s primary and interstate highway system. The pavement modeler and analyst will work closely with the pavement management leader, the pavement preservation engineer, the Research & Analytics Bureau, the Maintenance Bureau and other pavement management stakeholders.

As the Pavement Modeler and Analyst (Data Scientist 1) your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Pavement Asset Modeling: Maintain overall responsibility for pavement performance modeling and performance predictions. This includes keeping pavement model inputs current, running analyses using the pavement condition data, updated costs, and a variety of budget scenarios, establishing quality control of the models, and developing visuals and dashboards to effectively communicate the model predictions.

  • Optimization Analysis: Maintain overall responsibility for software and technical support to develop optimization recommendations of the Iowa DOT's pavement system (all Iowa DOT owned interstate and non-interstate pavements) and assist in developing visuals to communicate optimized treatment selections. Identify and prioritize opportunities for leveraging the pavement modeling data, cost data and program information, to drive business growth, efficiency, and innovation.

  • Maintain and update pavement management decision trees.

  • Use model performance data and decision trees to continually evaluate the recommendations of optimal timing of pavement preservation and rehabilitation treatments considering a variety of factors.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1 ) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in business analytics, economics, data science, statistics, mathematics, management information systems, or industrial management, and experience equal to three years of full-time work in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science.

2) All of the following (a, b, and c):

a. Three years of full-time work experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science; and

b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.

c. Possession of a professional certificate in data science, business analytics, or data analytics.

3) All of the following (a, b, and c):

a. One year of full-time work experience in business/data/statistical analytics, economic research, or data science; and

b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience; and
