Location: Ames - 50010 - Story County, IA

Shift Requirements: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (flexible schedule option), In-person with option for partial telework schedule. Occasional travel and overnights for project visits or conferences.

The Transportation Development Division is looking to hire a Pavement Preservation Engineer (Transportation Engineer Specialist) to join the pavement management team. As part of this team, you will develop and implement strategies to maintain and extend the lifespan of pavements on Iowa DOT’s primary and interstate highway system. The Pavement Preservation Engineer will with work closely with the Pavement Management Leader, Assistant District Engineers and other District staff, the Project Management Bureau, Research & Analytics Bureau, Maintenance Bureau and other pavement management stakeholders.

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain overall management responsibility for resurfacing, restoration, or rehabilitation (3R) projects,

  • Monitor and analyze the condition of the Iowa DOT’s primary and interstate highway system,

  • Propose allocation of resources based on need and optimization analysis in collaboration with all program stakeholders,

  • Develop reports summarizing the current program,

  • Develop and analyze data to make recommendations for future programs,

  • Maintain overall responsibility for management of the Maintenance and Preservation program including statewide interstate pavement maintenance, statewide contract maintenance, and small business development contracts.

    Special Requirements:

Maintain a valid Iowa Driver’s License.

Must possess and maintain licensure as an Iowa Professional Engineer in Active status. Licensure in Iowa must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) All of the following (a and b):

a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and

b. Two years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.

2) All of the following (a, b, and c):

a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and

b. One year of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and

c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
