Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
The Iowa State University Student Government is seeking candidates to serve as the Student Government Adviser (Program Coordinator I). This position will co-advise the three branches of the Student Government, empowering students to fulfill their responsibilities for self-governance and advising students as they implement special events, programs, and services that fulfill the mission and purpose of the ISU Student Government. This position will have direct responsibility for co-advising all members and leaders of Student Government, alongside two other professional staff from the Dean of Students Office and the Memorial Union. Specifically, the Student Government Adviser will oversee the on-boarding, training, and leadership development of all Student Government members, provide guidance to leaders across the organization in the fulfillment of their assigned responsibilities, facilitate member and leader transitions, and assist with Student Government projects, including but not limited to: elections, inauguration, training retreats, outreach events such as Destination Iowa State, homecoming or Cyclone Carnival, and Big XII conferences and events. In addition, the Adviser will mentor all members in an effort to support their interpersonal effectiveness and academic success.
The successful candidate will have excellent written communication and oral presentation skills, organization skills, and attention to detail. The candidate will also be able to coordinate multiple events and activities simultaneously. This position requires working frequent nights and occasional weekends. The successful candidate will have prior experience as a post-secondary student leader; a strong foundation in emergent leadership theories and current trends in higher education; as well as excellent organizational, time management, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Knowledge of basic office technology, desktop computers, and typical office software are also required.
The Student Government Adviser will report through the Memorial Union in the Division of Student Affairs at Iowa State University. As the “living room” of Campus, the Memorial Union is the hub of the Iowa State campus. Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 6 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.
