Mary Greeley Medical Center Speech Language Pathologist in Ames, Iowa
Position Summary
Under general direction, develops and implements speech pathology treatment programs for treatment of communication and swallowing disorders for pediatric through geriatric patients. Plans treatment programs based on individual patient needs identified by thorough evaluation. Instructs patients, families and caregivers in communication skills and safe swallowing techniques. Collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.
Position Responsibilities

Follows billing and reimbursement procedures, and maintains service-related records.
Evaluates patients to obtain and interpret data necessary for treatment planning and implementation.
Interprets evaluation findings to patients, family, significant others and patient care team.
Develops treatment plans, including goals and methods to achieve identified goals; coordinates treatment plan with patients family, significant others and patient care team; implements treatment directly; monitors patient’s response to intervention and modifies treatment as indicated to attain goals.
Develops appropriate home or community programming to maintain and enhance the performance of the patients in their own environment.
Terminates services when benefit has been achieved.
Documents results of patient’s evaluation, treatment, follow-up, and termination of services.
Completes modified studies as needed with radiologist, counsels patient/family on modifications and documents appropriately per department policy.
Develops and provides in-service education to members of the patient care team and to the community.
Provides guidance and/or instruction to ancillary aides, volunteers, and students.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
Graduate of a speech-language pathology program; successful completion of required internship training; successful completion of requirements for Certification of Clinical Competency as defined by The American Speech and Hearing Association.
Possession of license as a Speech Language Pathologist issued by the Iowa Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology.
Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
Organizational Requirements:
Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.
Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire, and must maintain throughout employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Considerable knowledge in the competencies defined by ASHA. Skill in the use of varied treatment approaches.
Ability to use tact and communicate effectively to patients (neonate through geriatric), family, guests, and other health care staff.
