Job Description

What you’ll do:

  • Transport goods, vehicles, and equipment to and from the Repair Shop, located in Ames, IA.

  • Operate light and heavy-duty vehicles, trailers, and specialized heavy equipment.

  • Use forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead shop hoists, front end loaders, and other lifting equipment to load and unload goods for transport.

  • Inspect and maintain semi tractors, various trailers, forklifts, and other shop equipment and vehicles.

  • Assist mechanics in repairing equipment.

  • Provide emergency snow removal.

All tools are supplied by the DOT. Lifting: Ability to perform heavy work, occasionally (1-33% of the time) lifting/lowering, carrying and pushing/pulling various items/using force from 50 - 100 lbs. Team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 lbs. License: Must possess a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire. Within 45 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class B CDL with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained until getting their Class A CDL; and Within five months following appointment, a valid Class A CDL with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained in order to continue employment. In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 391 &40), this job requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:1) Two years of full-time work experience in operating heavy trucks or tractor-trailers exceeding four tons.2) A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where satisfactory completion of a truck driving program approved by the Iowa Department of Education from an accredited college or vocational school equals six months of full-time experience.For additional information, please click on this link to view the job description (Download PDF reader).

Additional Qualification Requirements

  • Positions in this class require a possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.

  • Positions in this class are required to complete a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to federal drug and alcohol testing regulations (in conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, parts 40 and 382).
