Job Description

The Office of Design is looking to hire an experienced transportation engineer to lead our Methods Section. This team is responsible for ensuring that designers have the tools and guidance for consistent and timely plan development as well as leading essential programs for the Iowa DOT. This position requires an individual capable of applying advanced highway and engineering design principles of a broad scope and complexity. This position requires an engineer licensed to practice highway or civil engineering in the State of Iowa.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Developing and administering various design guidelines used by Iowa DOT staff in the project development process.

  • Ensuring that geometric design standards are consistent with sound engineering principles and current design philosophy.

  • Participating on various teams making decisions that balance safety, mobility, environmental impacts, property impacts, cost and long term maintenance.

  • Leading a program that evaluates and certifies safety hardware used within roadway corridors meets the current testing criteria for safety hardware.

  • Overseeing a program that delivers the Iowa DOT's American's with Disabilities Act program as it pertains to the highway system.

  • Managing a team responsible for computer software operations, development and support to ensure the maximum efficiency of the software applications.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of four years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibility. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board;

OR

employees withcurrentcontinuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to two years of full-time experience as a Transportation Engineering Manager or Senior Transportation Engineer;

OR

a Masters degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural or transportation engineering; or an area closely related to transportation engineering may be substituted for one year of the nonsupervisory required experience;

OR

employees withcurrentcontinuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to three years of full-time experience as a Transportation Engineer Specialist.
