Job Description

The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking to fill a Transportation Engineer Associate position to assist the state.

This position is located in the Office of Bridges and Structures, in one of the final design sections. Duties include performing structural analysis and design of different types of simple to moderately complex highway structures utilizing prestressed concrete, reinforced concrete, steel, aluminum, and wood. Simple to moderately complex highway structures include standard and slightly modified standard bridges, culverts, retaining walls, sign trusses, and routine overlay and repair projects. Design of this complexity are expected for the majority of the time.

The position will perform progressively more responsible introductory engineering work assignments to become eligible for licensing as a professional engineer. The position will review plans for simple to moderately complex highway structures that are submitted by outside sources for approval. Also the person will assist in the performance of inspections, analyzing any deficiencies and writing reports containing recommendations and cost estimates on structures that must be repaired or reconstructed to maintain serviceability of the highway system. Shift: Day Shift Hours: Flex available, Monday through Friday Possession of an Engineer Intern certificate issued by the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners is required within 18 months of hire.

Licensure as a professional engineer is required within 9 years of hire for continued employment as a Transportation Engineer Intern.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.

  • Possession of a verification of graduation with major course work in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.
