JOB GOAL:

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

POSITION IS LOCATED INSIDE THE ANAMOSA STATE PENITENTIARY. Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching basic skills, literacy, and High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) subject areas (reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics, with an emphasis on Reading) to incarcerated students enrolled in the Education Program at the Anamosa State Penitentiary (ASP). The instructor collaborates with fellow instructors on the development of curriculum aligned to adult education standards.

Work Schedule : 7.30 pm -3.30 pm

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Effectively teach basic skills, literacy and HSED subject areas to eligible offenders in a variety of instructional formats.

  • Work with special education youth in order to meet the requirements of existing Individualized Education Plans.

  • Maintain student and program records for reporting purposes.

  • Collaborate with fellow instructors at ASP, as well as in the Department of Corrections, on the development of innovate curricula for offenders in alignment with the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults.

  • Act as a liaison among the Iowa Department of Corrections, Anamosa State Penitentiary, and Kirkwood Community College, supporting the operations of Anamosa State Penitentiary.

  • Know and follow Department of Corrections security protocols and policies including key and radio control, supervision of incarcerated individuals in education, de-escalation and personal safety techniques, which may include training and use of chemical agents, first aid, and incident command systems.

  • Complete Department of Corrections training quarterly, face-to-face and online.

  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree with relevant instructional experience is required.In addition, candidates must be able to pass the ASP security clearance and graduate from the four week Department of Corrections Training Academy.

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Candidates with prior corrections, adult education, K12 instructional experience, corporate training, higher education instruction or at-risk teaching experience are preferred.
