TITLE: Para-educator, Teacher AssistantSpecial Education

QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma required. Demonstrated aptitude for successful fulfillment of assigned performance of responsibilities. REPORTS TO: Building Principal JOB GOAL: To assist teachers in the instruction ofspecial needs students.

GENERAL SUMMARY: Special education para-educators assist students with special needs under the direction of a certified teacher. Paraeducators generally work in an inclusionary setting (i.e. least restrictive environment). The special education para-educator assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities, help special needs students, and cares for their physical, emotional health, and safety, affirming their abilities, and striving to promote dignity in all relationships.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS: Assisting students in achieving academic success; Meet the bus in the morning and supervise before and after school activities until students are safely in the classroom or on the buses; Working with students who may be aggressive or disruptive in class; Behavior support which includes physical management (training provided upon hire); Personal care; Social integration; Consultation and collaboration with special education and regular education teachers as well as related service staff; In the case of a visually impaired student, verbalize the visuals in lessons, films, etc. Assists with self-care; Prepare tactile materials for lessons; Adapts lesson to the needs of the student; Assists with seat work when necessary; Assists and supervises at recess and lunch when necessary; Assists teacher with attendance and preparation when the student is independently occupied; Promotes positive public relations with staff and community and works to support a positive image of the school district; and Other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 180-day memorandum of employment. Wages and hours to be determined by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in writing by the Building Principal in consultation with the special education and/or classroom teacher.
