REPORTS TO Building Principal
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification
Must clear criminal and child/adult abuse background check
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred
Valid Iowa teaching license preferred
Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Ability to interpret data
Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
Experience preferred
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including, but not limited to concerts, athletic events, marching and jazz band competitions, honor bands and solo and ensemble contests as necessary
Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs
Recommend policies to improve the district instrumental music program
Oversee process of cleaning, repairing and storing all band equipment and uniforms
Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required
Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences
Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Department of Education, board polices and best practice
Plan and use appropriate instruction and learning strategies, activities and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students
Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement
Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students
Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with school board policies and student handbook
Take all reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment and facilities
Publish basic rules for proper student participation in band activities
Establish and maintain open communication with parents, staff and students
Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community
Work closely with district instrumental staff to coordinate instrumental music program

Maintain emotional control under stress
Frequent district and occasional statewide travel
Prolonged and irregular hours
Outdoor and indoor work
Exposure to sun, cold, inclement weather
Ability to work with interruptions
Capable of standing/walking for periods up to 2 to 3 hours
Tobacco and substance free environment
Must provide certification of good health prior to employment
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Wage and work year to be established by Master Contract
