Under the supervision of the Cancer Center Director, the Cancer Support Group Coordinator provides support and arranges educational presentations to patients/families/others. Responsible for facilitation of support and/or networking groups for people affected by cancer on behalf of St. Anthony Regional Cancer Center. Group Facilitators help members connect with one another as they discover ways to reduce isolation, regain a sense of control, and find hope. The Facilitator will collaborate with area hospitals, clinics and individuals to promote support group opportunities throughout the area.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Support Group Facilitation
Facilitates group members in sharing their cancer-related experiences, gaining knowledge and information in regularly scheduled support group meetings.
Serves as an expert in group facilitation and the psychosocial aspects of cancer across the continuum (diagnosis, treatment, post-treatment, long-term survivorship, end of life), but not as an expert in cancer or cancer treatment.
Provides telephone, mail and/or email follow-up with group members as needed.
Maintains paperwork specific to group management (rosters, attendance, group notes etc.)
Submit all required attendance sheets, reports and timesheets in a timely and accurate manner.
General Program Administration and Direct Service
Serves as a “host” for support group meetings. Expectations include, but are not limited to, introducing speakers/, providing introductory remarks that include a brief overview, participating in the program, occasional facilitation with presenter, fielding questions and answers, providing evaluations and closure and providing feedback to the Program Director on the process and content of the meeting.
Serves as liaison with support staff.
Outreach to local medical community.
Works to build community among all members, staff and others.
Supervision and Professional Development
Completes training experience that may include group observation, independent readings, and web-based coursework.
Participates in ongoing continuing education opportunities related to psychosocial oncology.
Serves as an ambassador to spread awareness about St. Anthony Regional Cancer Center across the community at large.
Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.
Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.
Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.
Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony’s Safety Manual.
Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
BSW, MSW preferred or RN with BSN with appropriate skill set.
Strong clinical skills, including individual and support group experience and ability to work with issues surrounding chronic and life-threatening illness.
Minimum of one years’ experience in oncology and/or support group facilitation preferred.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers, patients, families and employees of the organization.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS
Ability to work independently, efficiently, to build positive relationships. Must possess excellent communication skills. Ability to work a varied and flexible schedule, including evenings and some Saturdays. Commitment to working as a team member in a supportive community. Must have reliable transportation, current valid Iowa driver’s license.
