Job Summary

The Emergency Department Technician works under the supervision of a license Nurse and/or Physician to provide technical support for patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Reports on the condition of the patient to the appropriate nurse, Physician, and/or other staff.

• Cleans and stocks carts, rooms, and changes linen, as needed.

• Assists with obtaining and documentation of vital signs and placement of oxygen saturation, and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring systems.

• Assists in obtaining 12-lead EKGs, maintenance and care of specimens for laboratory analysis.

• Assist with wound care and insertion of nasogastric tubes as directed.

• Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies.

• Assists with positioning patients, application of orthopedic splints and dressings.

• Maintains use of appropriate medical equipment and supplies. Perform inventory of supplies as needed.

• Assists with patient transfers and discharges.

• Communicates closely with the Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants regarding any patient needs or concerns.

• Prepares patients for treatment and transports patients to and from other departments as needed.

• Works willingly and accepts assignments as given.

• Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.

• Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.

• Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

• Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standard.

• Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

• Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

• High school diploma, GED, or similar certification required, one year certificate from a college or technical school preferred; with one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Proof of an emergency medical technician (EMT) certification from an approved institution or training program or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

Position Requirements, Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

• Basic Life Support certification.

• Current Mandatory Reporter.

• Managing of Aggressive Behaviors within six months of hire

• Ability to work with a variety of patients and medical professionals.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written, verbal, and/or diagram form instructions

• Must possess effective time management skills.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers, patients, families and employees of the organization.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; talk and hear; and use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk and sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 21 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
