The Staff Accountant is responsible for the accounting of various departments, reconciling general ledger accounts and financial statement preparation with an emphasis on investment accounting. The position requires solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, experience performing month end closings, high attention to detail and accuracy.
Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual statutory entries and schedules including tax work papers.
Responsible for the monthly journal entries, balancing and financial statement preparation.
Investment accounting, including investment journal entries, maintaining and reconciling the investment system.
Monitor various reports for activity to enter into investment systems and distribution to appropriate personnel
Prepare support schedules for various basis of accounting, including statutory, GAAP and SEC reporting.
Accumulated and analyze information from internal systems to prepare internal reports for management.
Performs various project analysis and other ad-hoc research and analysis as assigned.
Assists in annual year-end by preparing schedules and providing documentation to key stakeholders.
Assist in the completion of regulatory filings on a statutory accounting basis
Gather information to complete GAAP and other accounting work papers.
Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required
Prior accounting experience preferred.
Property & casualty accounting experience a plus
Knowledge, skills & abilities:
Knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting principles
Basic knowledge of accounting and financial software programs.
Working knowledge of the theory and practice of accounting (i.e. fixed assets, investments, cash processes, reconciliation, financial statements)
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to work effectively both autonomously and within a team environment.
Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with ability to remain flexible to changing priorities.
Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Must maintain confidential information of the company.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals across all levels and departments within the organization.
Ability to identify problems, develop and execute solutions.
Possess strong competency with MS Office (specifically Excel).
