Job Description:

Job Title: Tire Person

Department: TrafficFLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function:

Installs, balances, and repairs tires. Sets alignment on tractors and trailers. Works with recappers to get tires capped. Maintains tire inventory. Responsible for furnishing own small hand tools.

Accountable and Reports to: Director, Truck Shop Assistant Truck Shop Manager

Positions that Report to you: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Installs balances and repairs tires using highly technological equipment.

  • Sets alignment on tractors and trailers using highly technological equipment.

  • Performs as a mechanic installing shock absorbers and replacement of bushings and kingpins as well as other repairs as needed.

  • Maintains tire inventory with tires that are installation ready at all times.

  • Maintains accurate record of work performed and parts used.

  • Works with recappers to get tires capped.

  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responds to service calls out of town to do tire repairs.

  • Assists mechanics as needed on daily basis.

  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:

  • Must have the ability to solve practical problems; variety of variables with limited standardization; and interpret instructions.

  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers.

  • Must have the ability to copy data from one record to another; interview to obtain basic information; write identifying information; and request supplies verbally or in writing.

Education and Experience:

  • High school or equivalent experience.

  • Training on vehicle alignment system helpful.

  • Valid CDL license required.

  • Zero to one year of similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to do very heavy work: exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Visual requirements include clarity of vision at distance of less than 20 inches and up to 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities:

  • Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:

The duties of this position are normally performed in a repair shop setting. There is exposure to diesel smoke, dirt, grease, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, dangerous chemicals/solvents, and electrical shock. There is significant pressure to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks in a day. Occasional travel and overtime is required. Must provide own small hand tools.
