Job Description

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa School of Deaf. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

ASL Interpreter (Executive Interpreter)

DESCRIPTION:

  • Interpret executive-level, highly confidential, and legally sensitive content between ASL and English in meetings involving the Superintendent, using appropriate linguistic register and vocabulary. Meetings may be in-person or virtual while on site at the Council Bluffs Campus.

This includes regular weekly meetings with non-signing members of ISD/IESBVI leadership teams, Department of Education personnel (including meetings with the superintendent’s supervisor), Department of Administrative Services personnel, and Department of Management personnel. Other meetings may include financial audits, staff discipline, staff evaluations and performance feedback, due process hearings, grievances, HHS and CPS inquiries, and other legally or medically sensitive situations. Keep all information in the strictest confidence.

  • Travel with the Superintendent and interpret executive-level content between ASL and English in meetings around the state of Iowa, with occasional out-of-state travel. Some travel will require overnight stays. Maintain all receipts and invoices from travel for appropriate reimbursement. Meetings may include conferences, presentations, face-to-face meetings with the Director of the Department of Education, legislators, and IESBVI regional directors. Keep all information in the strictest confidence.

  • Interpret between ASL and English for other administrators of Iowa School for the Deaf and Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, in-person or virtual, including the Chief Academic Officer, Director of Student Life, Director of Business Operations, Director of Human Resources, and Director of Communication. Keep all information in the strictest confidence.

  • Prepare recorded translations in ASL and English as needed for agency publications using standard recording equipment and video editing software.

  • Prepare for interpreting meetings with the Superintendent by reviewing agendas, policies, and procedures. Remain up to date on legislation that impacts ISD/IESBVI operations. Maintain appropriate security procedures for all sensitive documents, notes, agendas, and minutes.

  • Mentor students of interpreting by providing video-based and text-based feedback on interpreting work, meeting with interpreting apprentices before and after live assignments, and preparing materials for apprentices to use in skill development.

Hours: Typically 8:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M., Monday – Friday potential for work 24/7; travel - periodically including overnights

A successful candidate will bring or have the ability and desire to learn:

  • Serve as the primary ASL-English interpreter for the ISD/IESBVI Superintendent in all settings.

  • Mentor current students of interpreting

  • Contribute to document and video translation from ASL to English and English to ASL

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Native-Like Fluency in American Sign Language and English

  • RID Certification

  • Ability to obtain an Iowa Sign Language Interpreter and Transliterator license by date of Hire

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree from an interpreter training program.
