Early Childhood Teacher Dept/Div: Early Childhood FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate professional work preparing for and providing teaching and/or training services to students or parents in general instruction or assigned group of subjects, motivating students and parents to develop skill in assigned subject matters, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Early Childhood Family Education Coordinator. Continuous oversight is exercised over Early Childhood Family Education Paraprofessionals.

Essential Functions

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials; develops individual programs.

  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences.

  • Assesses and evaluates needs of students; provides instruction in individual or group sessions; establishes and maintains standards of behavior.

  • Evaluates students' progress; maintains appropriate records; prepares progress reports.

  • Communicates progress to parents and interested staff.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school district rules, regulations, principals, practices and procedures; general knowledge of standard policies, practices, and procedures dealing with early childhood or family classroom teaching; general knowledge of classroom teaching practices, methods and techniques; thorough skill operating standard office equipment, hardware and software; general skill compiling information and creating basic records or reports; general skill using classroom and instructional equipment; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with students, parents and teachers; ability to maintain standards of behavior; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents, students and the general public.

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree with coursework in Pre-K Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Physical Requirements

    This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work frequently standing, walking, speaking, or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very quiet location (e.g. park trail, storage or file room).

    Special Requirements

  • Pre-K Education, Early Childhood Special Education, or Elementary Education with Pre-K License.
