Department Summary:

The physics and astronomy program provides valuable contributions to the university, through teaching science literacy courses, involving students in cutting-edge research, and teaching them essential skills for successful professional careers (critical thinking, quantitative analysis, problem solving, collaborative and communication skills).

The program serves three categories of students: physics and astronomy majors and minors, students from other STEM programs, and non-science students from the university at large.

Students in other science programs across the university are also supported through introductory sequences of physics classes (algebra-based PHY 011 and PHY 012 for biology, BCMB, and health sciences students; calculus-based PHY 001 and 002 for other science majors, as well as all students enrolled in the dual-degree pre-engineering program with Washington University in St. Louis). The Descriptive Astronomy course (ASTR 001) has a scientific literacy AOI designation, providing general science education for non-science majors. The Physical Science course (PHSC 001) supports education majors who are pursuing a science certification. The Drake Municipal Observatory is jointly operated by the department and the city of Des Moines.

Job Summary:

Essential duties include teaching Astronomy 001, an introductory course for both majors and non-majors. The successful hire will evaluate student performance, assign grades, and interact with students through class discussions. There are two sections of Astronomy 001 in Fall 2024 with a cap of 50 students. These sections are taught twice a week at 11:00am – 12:15pm on Monday/Wednesday, and Tuesday/Thursday. The labs associated with Astronomy 001 are taught by the Laboratory instructor.

The search committee is particularly interested in candidates who, through their teaching, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

This is a one-semester position starting in August 2024, with a possible extension to the Spring 2025 semester to teach other first-year Astronomy courses.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Astronomy or a closely - related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Astronomy or a closely - related field.

• Advanced ABD or Ph.D. in Astronomy or a closely - related field. Evidence of demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the university level and continuing professional development is preferred.
