Principal Financial Group Assistant Financial Director in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

We’re looking for an Assistant Financial Director to join our corporate finance team. In this role, you’ll lead a team along with the financial planning and analysis activities for Principal’s Information Technology (“IT”) shared services. You’ll be responsible for planning, forecasting, budgeting and delivery of analysis and insights in consultation with technology community and finance leadership. This role enables management to identify and act on investment and expense optimization opportunities while making sound financial decisions.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Analyze IT, finance, Human Resources and external data sources to provide insights into IT spending, project costs and resource allocation while providing insights to IT and finance leadership in a clear, actionable and data-driven manner

  • Collaborate with IT leaders to develop budgets and forecasts for technology projects, infrastructure upgrades, software licenses, and maintenance

  • Consult on appropriate allocation methodologies for IT costs, while partnering with finance teams on implementation and analysis of business unit financial implications

  • Evaluate proposed IT investments by assessing financial impacts, and alignment with strategic goals. Create financial models to simulate different investment and business scenarios

  • Develop an understanding of IT strategic success factors, priorities, and key performance indicators while ensuring financial implications are understood by various audiences

  • Collaborate with Sourcing and IT teams to manage vendor contracts, negotiate pricing and assess vendor performance and risk

  • Participate in IT strategic planning sessions and consult with IT, finance and business leadership to ensure alignment with financial goals while advocating for investments that enhance efficiency, innovation, and competitive advantage

  • Foster a collaborative relationship between finance and IT teams enabling informed decisions

  • Provide leadership for all financial activities and projects. Direct workflow to ensure the timely and accurate preparation of financial information and reports

  • Initiate opportunities to provide technical and business expertise to technology leadership

  • Strong management and organizational skills including the ability to select, train, coach, develop and motivate team members

  • Skilled in collaborating with a variety of partners, including outside consultants and vendors, with ability to influence others without formal authority

  • Strong skills in communicating with all levels of the organization and easily translating complex topics for others to understand

  • Demonstrates the ability to embrace and understand the change process, and effectively guides others through change

Skills That Will Help You Stand Out

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance

  • 8+ years of finance experience

  • Managing financial planning & analysis for a technology department or function with experience in capacity planning, forecasting, budgeting, etc.

  • Strong knowledge and proficiency with spreadsheet and database or similar PC software packages

  • Advanced analytical thinking, descriptive statistics and consultation ability, and problem-solving mindset

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$123000 - $185000 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

This role offers an in-office and hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek) work arrangement in Des Moines, IA.
