What You'll Do

The Principal Financial Group (PFG) is seeking an AVP & Chief Actuary within Retirement & Income Solutions (RIS)! As the RIS AVP & Chief Actuary you will report to the CFO of RIS leading RIS actuarial operations and support the development of the actuarial community in partnership with the Chief Actuary of PFG and fellow Business Unit AVP & Chief Actuaries across the enterprise. This crucial role will focus on advancing the actuarial operations in RIS while ensuring a growing and successful community across the entire PFG enterprise.

As the AVP & Chief Actuary, you’ll:

  • Support RIS product lines and help deliver on relevant critical initiatives.

  • Lead all aspects of RIS’ Investment Only business line in partnership with the RIS CFO.

  • Effectively lead and develop the actuarial team through training, management of work activities, and performance reviews. Provide resource planning for future needs of the actuarial function.

  • Ensure actuarial product work is delivered timely, is of excellent quality, and meets business needs.

  • Ensure all actuarial work is performed in compliance with applicable state, federal, and country regulations including the United States and Bermuda. Apply professional standards of the American Academy and the Society of Actuaries.

  • Provide input to strategic planning and interact with stakeholders and corporate management regarding risks and impacts on the RIS business.

  • Serve as an advisor on financial risk, product strategy, product pricing, product design issues, asset/liability management, hedging programs, valuation, and capital management considerations.

  • Represent Principal through professional committees, working with regulators and rating agencies and other stakeholders as appropriate.

This role will be located in Des Moines, Iowa. Relocation will be considered as part of the offer.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), and a member in good standing of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA) required; 15+ years proven track record in the actuarial experience is strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, the Actuarial Standards of Practice promulgated by the Actuarial Standards Board, and the Code of Professional Conduct of the AAA and the SoA is required.

  • Must have in-depth knowledge of area of actuarial specialty and broad knowledge of several areas (e.g., insurance product design, pricing, assumption setting, experience studies, valuation, hedging/asset liability management, risk management), in a large insurance company environment with the ability to connect the dots across different functional areas.

  • Must be current and maintain continuing education requirements as specified by the AAA

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and shown leadership skills with an Enterprise mentality and a favorable executive presence are required.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$174000 - $236000 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.
