Brokerage Specialist Trainee

Assist in the proficient management of shipments for numerous transactional based customers by establishing and maintaining relationships with a variety of transportation providers.


  • Begin to develop and manage the business and service relationship with numerous customers to ensure their specific requirements; including service level expectations, commodity handling, facility protocol and hours of operations are understood and complied with.

  • Learn to manage shipments by establishing relationships and accurately on-boarding and qualifying a variety of transportation providers with capabilities to provide numerous modes including Over the Road (OTR), Rail, Ocean and Air.

  • Under direct supervision, negotiate rates with a variety of transportation providers. Learn, understand and apply current transportation rates allowing for fair and firm negotiations with carriers and customers.

  • Monitor shipments to ensure safe and timely delivery while complying with all State and Federal regulations and Ruan company policies.

  • Provide outstanding customer service by handling and responding to all customer inquiries timely and accurately. Investigate and proficiently resolve all shipment related issues to ensure on-time pickup and delivery.

  • Establish strong working relationships amongst co-workers and other Ruan operations to leverage capacity improve service and maximize profitability.

  • Assist in selling Ruan service offerings which includes prospecting as time permits.

  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as required.


  • Associate, Vocational or Technical Degree

Course(s) of study: Logistics/Transportation/Business

  • 1-2 years’ experience; Experience in transportation or logistics industry involving dispatch

  • Employee must have vast knowledge of the DOT rules and regulations. Must have strong computer skills including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and ability to learn related transportation software. Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and prioritize workload in a multi-task environment. Must have good customer service and relationship building skills. Must have strong verbal and written communication and the ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups of people.
