Principal Financial Group Claim Consultant 2 - Individual Disability in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

The Claim Consultant 2 will be responsible for technical review and development of Individual Disability (IDI) claims staff resulting in acceptable results while providing high quality service to the customer and field. Direct technical development, training, counseling, and motivation of claims analysts, along with informal leadership responsibilities. Responsible for audit, compliance of processes, and technical growth of staff.

  • Responsible for day-to-day technical leadership responsibility of the claim analysts. This includes overall technical analysis and development of proactive claim strategies, working with reinsurers, and providing technical development of staff by consulting with analysts on claims decisions. Works closely with senior level technical staff to provide overall technical development and training of staff.

  • Responsible for consulting and planning strategies for higher liability claims. Effectively work with both inside and outside counsel. Serve as the senior consultant to the Claims staff, Underwriting, Law and other departments. Responsible for addressing questions from field staff, insureds, and other representatives. Uses highly technical knowledge and in-depth policy understanding for claim analysis and judgment on claim decisions. Provides feedback to management regarding patterns and trends, so they can be addressed.

  • Review cases and formally audit files to ensure compliance to fair claims practices standards and internal validation model. Establish the administration criteria and procedures for the claims process.

  • Consult with compliance to assist in answering commissioner complaints, audits, and work to independently resolve other claim complaints.

  • Conduct effective individual and group training as needed to all levels of claim department staff.

  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as the need arises.

Who You Are

  • 8+ years of claim or customer service experience or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, or education.

  • In-depth knowledge of Individual Disability (IDI) claims practices, compliance customer service techniques, distribution systems, underwriting, issue, adjustment/change, service, and all EDP support systems.

  • Demonstrated strong technical claim coaching skills, effective issue identification and resolution, decision maker, and effective team builder.

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and pay strict attention to detail.

  • Ability to adapt to frequent change, make independent decisions and take ownership to resolve issues.

  • Advanced proficiency and business unit products, processes and systems.

  • Coaching and mentoring skills and being able to influence and motivate others.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem solving and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.

  • Good math skills.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$63750 - $121200 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.
