Principal Financial Group Director-Engineering (ESOP) in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to join our RIS (Retirement and Income Solutions) team. In this role, you’ll play a critical role in leading the integration of acquired business products and technologies. You will help leaders and engineers develop and implement strategies to align team goals with broader business objectives, ensuring cohesive and forward-thinking initiatives. This is an opportunity for some with a proven track record of managing complex technical projects within M&A contexts, balancing strategic vision with hands-on execution to join us and lead through this exciting work.

  • Work with collaborators and engineers to negotiate and handle technical trade-offs.

  • Cultivate and expand a high-performing engineering team, fostering leadership development and strategic thinking.

  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership to align technology strategies with business goals and M&A objectives.

  • Collaborate with business partners to understand business strategy and make recommendations on future technical trends/directions that can deliver strategic business objectives.

  • Model a growth mindset, mentor, and coach others.

Who You Are

  • You have a Bachelor's degree (preference in a computer science, technology, engineering or math-related field) or equivalent experience and 10+years of relevant experience

  • You have previous success in leading and mentoring senior technical leaders and managers, with a record of accomplishment of developing high-performing teams

  • You have the ability to set and implement a strategic vision that aligns with organizational goals and drives technological innovation

  • You are skilled in leading organizational change, particularly in scaling teams, integrating modern technologies, and evolving processes

Skills That Will Help You Stand Out

  • Experience in managing technical aspects of mergers and acquisitions, including due diligence, integration, and optimization

  • Deep knowledge of modern engineering practices, technologies, and methodologies, with a strong technical background

  • Ability to foster a culture of innovation, encouraging creative problem-solving and continuous improvement

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$153000 - $207000 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.
