WesleyLife is building a vertical hydroponic farm adjacent to Drake University as a part of our new Meals on Wheels campus. This farm will produce 20,000 pounds of fresh greens, with much of the day-to-day operations conducted by volunteers. These greens will be used for a variety of purposes including being served in our home delivered meals, at congregate meal sites, and at our Communities for Healthy Living. Our goal is to provide fresh and nutritious food to folks who are unable to access or afford it. The VISTA member will build capacity for the farm by developing a sustainable volunteer program to support day-to-day operations. The VISTA will serve as a part of Volunteer Iowa's program. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps members and a VISTA Leader. Members receive ongoing training, support, networking and professional development opportunities through Volunteer Iowa.

Member Duties : We are looking for someone who loves organizing and building community service opportunities to support fresh and local food systems. This VISTA member will work closely with our Head Grower and Volunteer Coordinator to build a sustainable volunteer program for our hydroponic farm through the following efforts: Build human infrastructure through volunteer recruitment and management; Supervise and train volunteers; Develop training procedures (Training videos/guides, in-person training, etc); Support/facilitate community partnerships; and Engage community through outreach efforts.
