Job Description

This is a non-merit position. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

The initial focus of theCold Case Investigatorwill be on the development of a statewide cold case unit. The investigator will partner with established local and state law enforcement to investigate unresolved homicides (cold cases) in the State of Iowa.

The main focus of the position will be to:

  • Develop and implement a strategy to prioritize cold cases.

  • Coordinate and partner with local and state law enforcement agencies.

  • Represent the Attorney General’s Office in a professional, knowledgeable, and ethical manner.

  • Ability to travel across the state of Iowa, as needed.

The investigator will necessarily interact with local sheriff and police agencies, the Department of Public Safety including the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Department of Corrections. The investigator must have experience managing investigations, interviewing witnesses, handling physical evidence including the process of submitting evidence to the DCI and FBI for analysis, marshaling large amounts of information into a coherent and reviewable format, and must have the ability to work with both large and small law enforcement agencies. The investigator also facilitates conversations between local and state law enforcement, county attorneys and state prosecutors on cases involving unresolved deaths in the effort to bring about successful prosecutions of offenders. On occasion the investigator will assist a prosecutor in trial in preparing witnesses, exhibits, and any other duty required.

Experience

Candidates must have a demonstrable investigative history of working directly with local sheriff’s offices, police departments, county attorney’s and the Iowa Department of Public Safety – DCI, on criminal investigations. Candidates must have experience in homicide investigations.
