Job Description
The Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) has a mission to identify traffic safety issues and through partnerships with city, county, state and local organizations, develop and implement strategies to reduce death and injury on Iowa's roadways using federally-funded grants to improve traffic safety in the State of Iowa.
The GTSB is seeking a dedicated staff member to lead the Bureau's overall strategic communications plans directed towards traffic safety. As theMedia & Communications Specialist, you will manage all media strategies, write, edit and review internal and external information and materials provided to traffic safety partners across the state and serve as our public information point of contact.
Primary Responsibilities:
Develop, supervise and execute the overall strategic communications plan for the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau including researching, planning, implementing programs, acquiring paid advertising and managing numerous contract vendors to produce messages to effectively reduce traffic related injury and death on Iowa's roadways.
Oversee the production and storage of publications as well as distribution to the broad traffic safety community across Iowa including the Governor, legislators, state and local law enforcement, other traffic safety partners and the general public.
Develop and implement or direct the implementation of social media strategies and content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other social media platforms; research and recommend new applications and strategies as appropriate.
Write, design, edit and review internal and external website content; direct or perform website management and content development activities to ensure accurate and timely updates of website information for the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau
Serve as liaison to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Governor's Highway Traffic Association for campaign development and implementation in Iowa.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicantsmust meet at least one of the following minimum requirementsto qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in journalism, public relations, graphic design, or communications and experience equal to two years of full-time work planning and developing content for dissemination through traditional media (newspapers, publications, radio, and television), websites, social media, and/or public speaking.
2) All of the following (a and b):
a. Two years of full-time work experience in planning and developing content for dissemination through traditional media (newspapers, publications, radio, and television), websites, social media, and/or public speaking; and
b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in journalism, public relations, graphic design, or communications equals one year of fulltime experience.
3) Number two above, where twenty-four semester hours of postgraduate coursework in journalism, public relations, graphic design, or communications from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required full-time work experience.
4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to 18 months of full-time work as an Information Specialist 1.
