Description

The new Progressive Care Unitwill provide personalized care in the proper setting for the care of patientswho need closer monitoring than is available on med-surg/tele floors, but havelower acuity than critical care. Examples of this are: post-op heart patients,patients who have had invasive cardiac procedures, and behavioral healthpatients waiting to be medically cleared to transition to the Behavioral HealthUnit. The nurse:patient ratio will be 1:3 and 1:4 depending on patient acuity.

GENERAL SUMMARY :

The Nursing Unit Manager serves primarily

as an assistant to the Director, managing day-to-day department operations and performing

assigned management responsibilities. Coordinates nursing activities to facilitate safe,

quality patient care at the unit/department level. Serves as a

resource and role model and collaborates

with a multidisciplinary team to optimize department operations. Maintains competence level

needed to deliver direct patient care to defined patient population. Management responsibilities comprise >

50% of the job role. Works independently

with limited direct supervision in accordance

with the Iowa Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, and patient care standards

and professional judgment.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS :

MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS

  • Manages daily unit/department operations,including patient care, unit/department personnel, and interdepartmentalactivities.

  • Ensures adequate staff and appropriate staffskills to meet patient/unit needs.

  • Plans unit and nursing resource utilizationbased on established admission, discharge and transfer criteria, initiatingappropriate intervention and collaboration to optimize patient care andunit/department operations.

  • Ensures evidence-based practices are in place. Leadsquality improvement activities including performance improvement processes tofacilitate clinical practice changes.

  • Leads interdisciplinary patient rounds and careconferences, management rounding to patients and staff, and Rounding toInfluence (Safety First).

  • Provides education/direction to staff to ensurepatients of a positive care experience. Resolves patient/family complaints.Escalates issues appropriately to the director or administrativerepresentative.

  • Performs assigned management duties, including,but not limited to:

  • Interviewingand hiring of personnel

  • Schedulingof staff

  • Utilizationof premium pay

  • Timekeeping

  • Monitoringdepartment expense budget and developing improvement plans

  • Staffperformance feedback and discipline

  • Maintainingpersonnel records

  • Staffperformance reviews

  • In the absence of the unit/department director, performsadditional management functions as assigned. May assume 24 hour accountabilityduring periods when the director is on vacation or leave of absence.

CLINICALFUNCTIONS

  • Maintains clinical competence to deliver patientcare to defined patient population as needed.

  • Provides front-line leadership as a resource,mentor, and role model in delivering patient care using a team approach.

  • Provides consultation upon request in area ofclinical expertise to other nursing staff or health professionals.

  • Serves as a resource or “Super User” fordocumentation in the electronic medical record.

  • Leads or delegates daily huddles and maintaininghuddle boards.

  • Monitors safety compliance and contributes tofostering a culture of safety at the unit level.

  • Assist nursing and interdisciplinary team inpatient/family education and discharge planning.

  • Supports clinical research by assisting staff asneeded in collecting data for approved research protocols.

  • Facilitates communication betweenpatient/family, physicians and other caregivers to achieve consensus for theplan of care. Consults with the Ethics Committee as appropriate

EDUCATION

  • Collaborates with Unit Director and ClinicalResource Nurse or department educator in planning for achievement andmaintenance of skills/ competencies of team personnel.

  • Understands employee competency documentationrequirements.

  • Provides orientation/education for staff,students and other hospitals and community organizations, as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • Possession of a current or compact state license as a Registered Nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.

  • Bachelor degree in nursing required, or actively in pursuit of BSN degree (accepted into a BSN Program and/or currently enrolled). Expected to take at least six credits per year at Unit Director’s discretion for exception.

  • 18 month of RN experience required.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
