Job Description

The Governor's Office of Drug Control Policy, located in Des Moines, Iowa, is expanding current efforts to collect, organize, and disseminate opioid related information to citizens, stakeholders, policy makers, and legislators. These efforts include participation in a variety of strategic planning initiatives, grant applications, data collection/analysis, social media messaging, organization of community meetings, and other strategic processes as identified by the VISTA member, ODCP, and partner agencies. Certain areas of the country experienced elevated opioid use rates as much as a decade prior to Iowa. Much can be learned from the response of those jurisdictions. Project staff will research and accumulate a set of lessons learned/best practices which can be shared with Iowa stakeholders. Iowa has established a network of prescription drug drop off locations involving both law enforcement and pharmacy sites. Project staff will work with participating agencies to track the volume of medications collected as well as disposal practices. VISTA member will promote the drop off sites and develop public education materials to be disseminated by participants. The VISTA will serve as a part of Volunteer Iowa's Rural Development and Opioid AmeriCorps VISTA project. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps members and a VISTA Leader. Members receive ongoing training, support, networking and professional development opportunities.

Member Duties : VISTA member will engage in policy and strategy research related to the opioid epidemic. Project activities will include: research on effective strategies/policies; data collection on current opioid work in Iowa; and opioid specific enhancements to the Iowa Drug Control Strategy. Member will work with ODCP staff to strengthen and support management of prescription drug collection programs in Iowa. Project activities will include: promotion of Rx drug drop boxes; develop and publish web content; develop and disseminate educational materials to be distributed at collection sites. Member will assist ODCP staff and other state and local stakeholders to increase community outreach. Project activities will include development of descriptive summaries of the emerging opioid epidemic and current state and local responses; outreach through traditional media and social media channels; serve as a representative to other statewide partners on opioid specific information.
