GENERALSUMMARY :

The Orthopedic Technician is a multi-skilled

technician whose primary function is to assist with application of

immobilization devises, traction assembly and has accountability for orthopedic

equipment inventory throughout the hospital.

The Orthopedic Technician assists with Rehabilitation Technician and

mobility functions throughout the shift as directed for patients in all age

groups, neonate, infant, child, adolescence, adult and geriatric.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS :

  • Applies overhead traction and other traction set-ups independently on avariety of beds.

  • Assists physicians as requested or scheduled in various units throughoutthe hospital

  • Applies OCL and plaster splints as well as extremity casts withnon-displaced fractures as directed by an Orthopedic or Emergency Physicianfollowing their examination of the patient.

  • Prepares for and assists physicians with application of other casts.Assists Orthopedic Surgeons in Surgery as scheduled.

  • Splits and trims casts. Applies color wrap as directed.

  • Replenishesorthopedic supplies necessary, assists nursing staff on hospital units,transports patients, performs Rehab Technician functions to meet patient anddepartment needs at the time.

  • Assists withpatient mobility within hospital nursing units. Under indirect supervision oflicensed therapy staff provides restorative treatment plans designed tomaintain patient level of functioning in place of/ or is adjunct to otherskilled rehabilitation services; carries out, monitors and/or adjustsrestorative treatments utilizing therapy techniques, modalities, and equipmentfor which competency has been demonstrated; assumes responsibility forpatient’s care, safety and environment throughout treatment; observes, reportsand records all pertinent patient information according to department policy.

  • Prepares patient, equipment, supplies(including topical medications used in burn/wound care; does NOT applymedicated supply to patient), and medical record for transport; verifiesRehabilitation Services order in chart; selects technique for transfer andequipment for transport according to established policies and procedures andtherapist guidance; assumes responsibility of safe, timely transport ofRehabilitation Services patients and medical records to and from departmentclinics.

  • Works in acollaborative effort with others: answers department telephone, taking completemessage or answering questions related to patient schedule; assists in filingand record keeping; monitors patient during exercise.

  • Assists ingeneral maintenance of department: Cleans and stores equipment, restocks linensand supplies, changes linens and cleans treatment areas, maintains transportequipment and arranges for necessary repairs, empties soiled linen/wastecontainers

  • Demonstratesappropriate and effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication withpatients and their families, colleagues, medical staff, and the public;participates in staff meetings and inservice education; protects patientconfidentiality in regard to medical, emotional, and social status.

  • Retrievesrelevant information from medical records; uses mainframe computer to maintainaccurate scheduling, treatment and charge records; assists in generalmaintenance of work environment and equipment.

Qualifications

MINIMUMKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Proof ofcompletion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population servedwithin three (3) months of hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified orobtained by the end of the orientationperiod (approximately six (6) weeks). Acceptable credentialing bodies andcertifications include American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuerand American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

  • Experience in orthopedic field preferred
