Job Description

The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL) is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, solution-oriented, and enthusiastic professional to join our regulatory department and serve as the Iowa Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) Administrator at our central office near Valley Junction in Des Moines, Iowa.

DIAL is a multifaceted regulatory agency charged with protecting the health, safety, and well-being of Iowans, and is comprised of eight core operational divisions: Administrative Hearings, Building & Construction, Health & Safety, Investigations, Labor/OSHA, Licensing, Workers’ Compensation, and Administration.

The Compliance Bureau of the Professional Licensing Division is responsible for fielding complaints, overseeing the investigatory process, as well as conducting inspections of licensed facilities and following up to ensure deficiencies are addressed. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy Compliance Officer position reports to Chief Investigator. A background in pharmacy compliance and experience with compounding is desired. This position is home domiciled and will require statewide travel with possible overnight stay occasionally. Compliance officers are assigned a territory, however, staffing requirements may require investigations and inspections outside of that territory at times.

Licensure as a Pharmacist in the State of Iowa is required for this position.

  • Ability to work from a home environment with occasional reporting to the DIAL facility in South Des Moines as necessary.

What You’ll Do

You will be an integral member of our compliance unit contributing to the agency’s operations by:

  • Completing inspections, surveys, and audits of licensed pharmacies, drug wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors, and controlled substance registrant offices and businesses to check for compliance with state and federal laws, rules, and regulations regarding the practice of pharmacy and distribution of prescriptions drugs and controlled substances. Prepare and submit appropriate reports and follow up regarding identified deficiencies.

  • Review complaints from consumers, health care practitioners and others that alleged violations of laws, regulations or administrative rules. Complete thorough investigations to determine whether rules or regulations were violated. This can include interviewing witnesses, gathering documents and exhibits, conducting audits, reviewing security footage. Preparing thorough and detailed reports for consideration by the Board.

  • Advising pharmacists and other health care providers in all matters relating to pharmacy, including,

but not necessarily limited to: prospective drug use review; patient counseling; related cognitive services; and rule clarifications.

  • Conferring with and assisting law enforcement, regulatory, and industry enforcement personnel in matters relating to the enforcement of state drug laws.

  • Conferring with medical, dental, podiatry, veterinary, optometric, and other prescribers regarding dispensing, distributing, and storing controlled substances.
