POSITION PURPOSE

Responsible for the supervision of Pharmacy activities related to medication preparation and distribution within the MercyOne Medical Center Inpatient Pharmacy. Directly responsible for activities of technical personnel assisting in the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients of all ages including neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Responsible for ensuring performance excellence in terms of quality, safety, service, affordability, and technology under the direction of the Pharmacy Manager and the Market Director of Pharmacy for the main inpatient pharmacy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

  2. Provides leadership and supervisory oversight of inpatient pharmacy technician personnel. This includes medication preparation and distribution, on-boarding and training, and managing employee performance.

  3. Responsible for creating and maintaining a master and daily schedule for pharmacy technicians and interns that effectively supports pharmacy services. Adjusts staffing and coordinates workflow as needed and considers fluctuations in workload and unplanned staff vacancies.

  4. Required to staff in the main inpatient pharmacy approximately 25-50% of working hours.

  5. Works in collaboration with the pharmacy operations manager to train and schedule pharmacy interns and technicians participating in the ASHP Tech in Training Program.

  6. Monitors and reviews staff performance, performs annual performance evaluations, and handles disciplinary action when warranted.

  7. Reviews and approves employee timecards in Dimensions for direct reports and supports manager when needed. Utilizes dimensions to track staff attendance points and holds staff accountable to the Trinity Attendance Policy.

  8. Submits requisitions as needed for staff replacements, and other Workday maintenance tasks. Participates alongside Pharmacy Manager in pre-employment interviews and makes recommendations regarding hiring.

  9. Assists Pharmacy Manager or designee with quality assurance measures for the Inpatient Pharmacy Technicians and Interns including required USP 795, 797, and 800 guidelines.

  10. Monitors ongoing quality assessment programs relating to safe drug utilization, security, infection control, and professional practice consistent with TJC, ASHP, CMS, and Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

  11. Involved with the development and review of policies and procedures specific to the work and scope of practice of pharmacy technicians.

  12. Leads or delegates regular technician huddles and organizes monthly technician meetings.

  13. Assumes accountability of additional tasks and direct reports during periods when the manager is on vacation or leave of absence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s Degree or a minimum of 3 years leadership experience.

  2. National Pharmacy Technician Certification

  3. Registered as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy

  4. Must possess excellent verbal and written communications skills, presentation skills, be well organized and maintain a highly professional manner and appearance.

  5. Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills that foster collaboration and teamwork.

  6. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

  7. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Must be able to set and organize own work priorities and adapt to them as they change frequently. Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles.

  2. Proficient in the use of computers, software for pharmacy and healthcare applications, specific pharmacy practice technology and equipment.

  3. Must possess the ability to comply with Trinity Health policies and procedures.

  4. Knowledge and understanding of USP 795, 797 and 800 guidelines.
