Responsibilities

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Recreation Therapist provides assessment and treatment as part of the multi-disciplinary team. This includes initial assessment, group and individual treatment, and participation in care planning with the multi-disciplinary team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Completes assessments for patients within 72 hours of admission. Develops discipline –specific treatment goals in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary treatment team.

  • Facilitates therapeutic recreation therapy and leisure group activities as part of the active treatment program schedule. Provide individualized treatment for patients as indicated by the treatment plan. Modifies treatment plan as needed to meet changes in patient need.

  • Maintains a high standard of professional accountability regarding safety, efficiency, efficacy, ethics and legal issues. Maintains patient confidentiality in all aspects of treatment.

  • Demonstrates appropriate and effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication with patients and their families, medical staff, colleagues and the public; participates effectively as a team member in clinical rounds, treatment planning, and discharge plan of care.

  • Documents per unit policy on patient’s progress.

  • Completes discharge summary timely upon patient’s discharge.

  • Plans and implements an age- appropriate recreational therapy program.

  • Assists patients with planning leisure time for post discharge.

  • Stays current with evidence based practice and implements in treatment program.

  • Maintains a positive working relationship with other staff members.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrates ability to meet age specific needs of patient/family.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation with a Therapeutic Recreation emphasis.

  • Completion of an internship in a clinical setting under supervision of a Certified Recreation Therapist.

  • Must be certified or eligible for certification at the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist level with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.

  • Two years experience working in applicable mental health setting preferred.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
