GENERAL SUMMARY :

Provides individualized, high-quality nursing care to patients of all ages. Uses a team approach to delegate and coordinate patient care at admission, transfer, and discharge. Independently delivers nursing care using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, ethical principles, and professional judgment. Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. Job duties may vary by shift or may be unit-specific.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Administers nursing care to patients; includesassessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating the patient’s care plan incoordination with the physician.

  • Provides nursing careguided by physician orders, unit protocols and professional judgment.

  • Communicateseffectively and appropriately with staff, physicians, patients, familiesand other healthcare team members.

  • Participates in ongoingeducational activities related to clinical knowledge and professionalissues.

  • Contributes to theprofessional development of peers and colleagues by sharing knowledge andskills.

  • Delivers care in amanner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity and rights.

  • Considers factorsrelating to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning/delivering patientcare.

  • Provides patient/familyor caregiver education and counseling in recognition and solution ofphysical, emotional, and environmental health problems.

  • Utilizes hospitalinformation system to process orders/data and retrieve patientinformation.

  • Maintains knowledge ofdocumentation requirements needed for patients’ records.

  • Works independentlywith limited direct supervision using the Nurse Practice Act, MercyMedical Center policies, nursing standards, and professional judgment.

  • Maintains knowledge ofequipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoringequipment, and drainage devices).

  • Initiates emergencysupport measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patientfrom injury).

  • Complies withOSHA/JCAHO and other regulatory agency recommendations and guidelines.

Scheduled Hours per 2 week Pay Period: 80

Primary Location: IA > DES MOINES > MERCY MEDICAL CENTER

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLSAND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • Possession of a current or compact state licenseas a Registered Nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.

  • Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeksof hire. Acceptable credentialingbodies and certifications include American Red Cross CPR/AED for theProfessional Rescuer and American Heart Association Basic Life Support forHealthcare Providers.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abusetraining specific to populations served within three (3) months of hire.

  • Ability to read, write and speak Englishlanguage.
