Position Overview

As a Sr. Industrial Hygienist in the IOSHA Division, you will work under the supervision of the Consultation and Education Bureau Chief at our central office near Valley Junction in Des Moines, Iowa. You will work together with the consultation program manager and other consultants and education staff to identify and offer corrective action for workplace hazards in facilities and construction sites across the state.

Iowa OSHA is located at 6200 Park Ave. Des Moines, IA 50321, but our services are statewide. Travel is required for this position. The businesses we service are statewide, and we must be as well. Overnight and day travel are required. Overnight travel can be up to four nights per week.

Selectives

094 Chemistry6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in the branch of physical science that studies the composition, structure, properties, and change of matter.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification: \

1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in industrial hygiene, chemical, civil, or mechanical engineering, environmental health, occupational safety, chemistry, physics, or a biological science, and experience equal to one year of full-time work in industrial hygiene compliance, testing, or monitoring.

2) Five years of full-time work experience as a safety officer in an industrial or construction setting, which included conducting inspections or investigations for the purpose of evaluating workplace health and safety with at least one of those years working with industrial hygiene compliance, testing, or monitoring.

3) A total of five years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in industrial hygiene, chemical, civil, or mechanical engineering, environmental health, occupational safety, chemistry, physics, or a biological science equals one year of full-time experience.

4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of fulltime work as a Safety Health Consultant.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
