Principal Financial Group Strategic Portfolio Manager I in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

Principal is looking for a Strategic Portfolio Manager I to partner with senior business leaders in Business Owner Solutions and enterprise partners to influence and ensure portfolio alignment with enterprise strategy. This includes influencing to establish clear priorities, creating visibility and transparency on progress towards outcomes, and facilitating trade-off decisions to optimize business outcomes within resource constraints. You will serve as a trusted collaborator and advisor to the portfolio leadership team. In addition, you will promote the portfolio vision to strengthen partnership across the enterprise. You will drive change leadership to continuously improve business outcomes. You will also leverage effective portfolio management tools and techniques to help advance the portfolio. Examples of the kind of work include:

  • Execution of Strategy - Ensure alignment to Business and Enterprise strategic priorities and objectives and the achievement of strategic outcomes. Improve use of data and analytics to advise decision making towards building the right things. Partner with portfolio stakeholders to deliver results that advance strategic outcomes.

  • Communication & Visibility - Lead and proactively communicate results, progress, risks, roadblocks, financial aspects, and data to teams, sponsors and partners ensuring collaboration, decision making, and direction.

  • Inspire Change – Lead continuous improvement, partnering with leaders, coaches, and team members to cultivate discovery and innovation, improve delivery speed, increase transparency, and achieve strategic outcomes. Advocate, influence, and lead change to become a more impactful organization with an innovative culture.

  • Organizational Management - Effectively drive the portfolio to execute on customer needs and business objectives through coordinating, communicating clearly, aligning and collaborating, and managing dependency and risk. Work across teams and vendors to remove impediments and ensure decision making leverages data where possible.

  • Perform other job-related duties or special needs as required.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • 8+ years of demonstrating progressive responsibility for strategic integration, stakeholder alignment, complex decision making, analysis, and informal leadership or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, or education

  • 4+ of those years listed above, having direct responsibility for management of sophisticated, cross-functional initiatives

  • Must possess excellent leadership, communication, presentation, facilitation, planning, and decision-making skills

  • Must be able to build and maintain relationships and facilitate collaboration and communication, including being perceived as a leader at all levels without formal authority

  • Must be results oriented and able to adapt and deal with ambiguous situations and manage expectations

  • Must be able to execute effectively in matrix management environment

  • Must have a strong intuition for business and an understanding of the capabilities of information technology and applications to find opportunities for process improvement

  • Experience and/or proven track record to assess organizational culture and operating model needs; and appropriately adapt to deliver required results

  • Must be able to operate in ambiguous environments

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$123000 - $167000 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.
