POSITION PURPOSE:

Under the supervision of the Neurodiagnostic Services Director and under general direction of the medical director (MD), performs standard and complex polysomnographic recordings and multiple sleep latency testing; scores and documents data, assesses, applies and titrates CPAP or Bi-Level. Provides direct patient education.

What you will do:

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.

  • Gather and Analyze Patient Information

  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs, and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.

  • Complete and verify documentation.

  • Explain pre-testing and post-testing procedures to the patient.

  • Testing Preparation Procedures

  • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary.

  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.

  • Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments if necessary.

  • Perform positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.

  • Polysomnographic Procedures

  • Follow procedure protocols such as MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration etc. to ensure collection of appropriate data.

  • Follow “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)

  • Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments, if necessary.

  • Document routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.

  • Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).

  • Follow “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient.

  • Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedure and therapeutic interventions.

  • Polysomnographic Record Scoring

  • Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.

  • Score clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc.) according to center specific protocols.

  • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.

  • Service Management and Professional Issues

  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.

  • Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance.

  • Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory.

  • Maintain current BCLS certification.

  • Demonstrate effective written and spoken communication skills.

  • Demonstrate appropriate social skills.

  • Respond to study participant’s procedure-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.

  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.

  • Comply with the ABSM Standards of Conduct.

  • Follow HIPAA policies to maintain the privacy and security of patient information.

  • Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

What we are looking for:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Must be credentialed as CRT, RRT, REEGT, or BRPT or

  • Must be registered in sleep technology or accepted to sit for the registry examination through one of the following organizations: ABSM, NBR, BRPT, AASM.

  • Must become Registered within two years of hire.

  • Non-registered technicians must be enrolled in or completed the A-STEP Online Self Study Modules or CAAHEP accredited sleep technology. If enrolled, all A-STEP modules must be completed within a 2-year timeframe.

  • Must participate in an average of 10 hours per year of CEC sleep related education activities over a 3 year period.

  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) is required.

  • At least one year of prior experience in administering and scoring polysomnographies or in clinical respiratory care strongly preferred.

  • Computer Competency: Demonstrated experience and competency with Microsoft Office suite, e-mail and a variety of web-based programs and browsers, with the willingness and ability to update and increase skills as needed to meet the goals of the departments.

  • Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information (i.e. HIPAA, Stark, etc.)

  • Maintains an excellent working relationship within the department and with all of our internal and external customers.

  • Ability to handle interactions with discretion, tact and courtesy when dealing with sensitive issues and confidential information.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to relate to people across all levels and diverse backgrounds.

  • Keeps Director informed about important issues.

  • Demonstrates time management, prioritization and organizational skills including an ability and willingness to plan, organize and accomplish tasks accurately and in a timely manner to exercise sound judgment under pressure and to manage multiple and competing activities simultaneously.

  • Requires a high degree of professionalism in both dress and conduct on the job.

  • Excellent knowledge of sleep testing procedures and equipment; apnea diagnostic policies/ procedures.

  • Excellent problem solving skills.

  • Able to work independently and productively, with minimal supervision and as part of the Neurodiagnostic Services team.

  • May be required to increase/decrease work schedule and/or vary hours depending on the needs of the department.
