Manager - Lab

FTE: 1.0( Full time, 40 hrs per week)

Shift: Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm

Key Accountability:

  • Responsible for activity and operations within specified area and will have organizational responsibility for area’s staff and budget.

  • Responsible for organizing staffing and administering all personnel in one or more functional organizational units.

  • Responsible for providing functional advice and control to all units of the organization within their discipline.

  • Activities of subordinates are highly technical and varied; supervision may require complex scheduling and functional guidance in a very complex environment.

  • Responsible for implementation, ongoing management and strategic growth.

Planning, Budgeting, Organizing, Coordinating:

  • Develop annual goals and objectives while providing effective leadership to accomplish the goals.

  • Develop strategic plan in coordination with system and hospital strategic plans

  • Develop and revise structure to meet goals through positive adaption to change through open communication and positive support for staff.

  • Plan and manage the effective and efficient use of human resources, materials and equipment.

  • Prepare and operate under a budget to include staffing, materials, and equipment.

  • Ensures proper communications and plans are coordinated with other areas.

  • Collaborates with the Medical Director and UPH Lab CSG.

  • Establishes collaborative relationship within and across disciplines that promote patient satisfaction, culturally competent care, and clinical excellence.

Directing and Evaluating, Decision Making:

  • Develop system to measure area effectiveness through continuous monitoring of quality levels including Press Ganey scores. Employee relations and Policy development.

  • Ensure department is in compliance with rules and regulations established by Iowa Department of Public Health, CAP, CLIA, and the DNV (Det Norske Veritas) Manage day to day operations while providing quality and effective services.

  • Evaluate employee performance through regular review and documentation.

  • Ability to make frequent decisions and take actions of a difficult nature involving several related functions.

  • Objectives involve resolution of highly complex problems using factual information and management principles.

  • Requires ability to make frequent technical decisions and take action of a difficult and complex nature to achieve assigned objectives.

  • Responsible for developing problem solutions using established principles.

  • Develop system to measure area’s effectiveness.

  • Manage day to day operations.

Staffing/Scheduling, Training, Communication:

  • Identify and develop staffing plans.

  • Develop key personnel in their area.

  • Ensures proper orientation of new staff including, policies, procedures, safety information and general department information.

  • Facilitates development of clinical judgment in health-care team members through role modeling, coaching, and/or mentoring.

  • Ensure area’s functions are appropriately staffed according to productivity which includes exam volumes and staff hours of service. Develop key personnel in their area through development of strong relationships that allows for open honest communication to include performance feedback and constructive criticism.

  • Ensure proper communications and plans are coordinated with other areas within the hospital by active engagement in hospital committees, meetings and hospital events.


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent required in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology

  • Master's Degree preferred


  • Three years’ experience with progressive responsibilities and demonstrated leadership abilities in laboratory services.


  • Complete Laboratory Board of Certification through an approved agency such as American Society of Clinical Pathologists within one year of hire.

  • Member of the Support Stroke team requiring two hours of annual stroke education.


  • Ability to work effectively with others, solve problems, think creatively, communicate effectively and implement change in a positive manner.

  • Ability to organize, do long-range planning. Possess integrity, initiative, flexibility and good interpersonal skills.


  • Operates and maintains expensive, sophisticated Laboratory equipment.
