Job Description

PSYCHOLOGIST 3

On classification basis, schedule and conduct individual and group counseling sessions with offenders and provide progress notes on identified clients.

Carry a caseload of general population offenders with identified mental health/special needs issues and meet with caseload based on individual need and policy requirements.

Offenders on caseload will include seriously mental ill (SMI) offenders and those needing additional clinical intervention and/or behavior modification.

Administer/score and interpret a variety of psychological assessment instruments including intelligence, personality, and vocational tests.

Complete psychological evaluations of assigned caseload for the Board of Parole and complete related psychological testing as needed.

Complete other evaluations as required.

Oversee SSIP/MHO observer and mentor program.

Hold quarterly training for offender observers and mentors.

Review related documentation.

Communicate with facility staff on updates to mental health policy and housing of mentally ill offenders.

Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and staffings regarding specific clients related to functioning of the unit.

Review mental health treatment progress and needed intervention for offenders in segregation status.

Provide training to new and existing staff on mental health issues in both pre-service and ongoing basis as needed by facility.

Facilitate and conduct treatment programs for general population offenders.

Attend required institutional training.

Attend statewide IDOC Psychology meetings to maintain skills/knowledge of current practices/procedures/policies relevant to serving offenders with mental health/special needs within the IDOC.

Provide group treatment to identified SMI/Special Needs Offenders.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a doctorate degree in psychology, behavior analysis, or counseling, and experience equal to two years of full-time clinical work in the provision of counseling and therapy in an institutional or community mental health, intellectual disability, long-term care, or correctional program.

2) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in psychology, behavior analysis, social work, or counseling, and experience equal to four years of full-time clinical work in the provision of counseling and therapy in an institutional or community mental health, intellectual disability, long-term care, or correctional program.

3) Possession of a license to practice psychology from the Iowa Board of Psychology. (Note: Please include your license information)

4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Psychologist 2.
